Position Summary

International House (I-House) is seeking a compassionate, strategic, and culturally responsive Director of Resident Health and Wellbeing (Director) to serve as the primary wellness resource for our diverse international residential community.

Reporting to the Vice President of Resident Experiences, the Director provides leadership in resident wellbeing through supportive counseling, case management, crisis intervention, wellness education, and community engagement. The Director develops and implements initiatives that foster resilience, belonging, intercultural understanding, and holistic wellbeing while supporting residents through personal, academic, emotional, and cultural transitions.

As a member of the Resident Experiences leadership team, the Director collaborates across departments to strengthen the resident experience, supervise the Peer Counselor Program, coordinate wellness initiatives, and contribute to the strategic priorities of International House.

Live-In Position Expectations

This is a required live-in position. The Director is provided a one-bedroom apartment within International House and serves as an active member of the residential community. Living on-site is an essential function of the position and supports the Director's ability to build relationships with residents, provide timely support, and respond effectively to emergencies.

The successful candidate will:

  • Reside at International House as a condition of employment.
  • Maintain a visible, approachable, and engaged presence within the residential community.
  • Participate in an established on-call rotation and respond to resident emergencies and urgent concerns occurring outside normal business hours.
  • Provide after-hours consultation and support to Resident Experiences staff and Public Safety regarding wellness and behavioral concerns.
  • Support evening and weekend programs, community events, and institutional initiatives as needed.
  • Exercise sound professional judgment in responding to emergencies and determining when consultation, referral, or emergency services are required.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure continuity of care following after-hours incidents.
  • Model the mission, values, and community standards of International House while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

Essential Responsibilities

Clinical Support & Resident Wellbeing

  • Serve as the primary wellness resource for residents experiencing emotional, personal, academic, social, or cultural adjustment concerns.
  • Provide brief, solution-focused supportive counseling, wellness consultations, and individualized case management.
  • Assess resident needs, develop support plans, and coordinate referrals to healthcare providers, mental health professionals, hospitals, insurance providers, legal resources, and other community services.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community providers experienced in serving international and culturally diverse populations.
  • Maintain confidential documentation consistent with organizational policies, ethical standards, and applicable laws.

Crisis Response & Risk Management

  • Respond to mental health emergencies, behavioral concerns, and situations affecting resident safety and wellbeing.
  • Conduct risk assessments and coordinate interventions with Resident Experiences, Public Safety, healthcare providers, and emergency contacts.
  • Develop safety plans, coordinate emergency referrals, and provide post-crisis follow-up to support resident recovery and reintegration.
  • Assist in developing crisis response protocols and provide consultation and training to staff regarding behavioral concerns and crisis intervention.

Wellness Strategy & Health Promotion

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive wellness strategy promoting emotional, physical, social, and psychological wellbeing.
  • Design and facilitate educational programs addressing stress management, resilience, mental health awareness, healthy relationships, mindfulness, sleep, nutrition, and cultural adjustment.
  • Create prevention-focused initiatives that encourage healthy behaviors, reduce stigma surrounding mental health, and increase awareness of available resources.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements based on assessment data and resident feedback.

Community Engagement & Intercultural Wellness

  • Promote an inclusive and welcoming community that supports residents from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Provide guidance related to cultural adjustment, homesickness, identity development, intercultural communication, and navigating life in New York City.
  • Collaborate with Resident Experiences staff to integrate wellness throughout the residential experience.
  • Support the planning and implementation of cultural, educational, leadership, and community-building programs aligned with the mission of International House.

Leadership & Program Administration

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Peer Counselor Program, including recruitment, training, supervision, coaching, and evaluation.
  • Develop training on active listening, helping skills, intercultural communication, crisis response, ethics, confidentiality, and referral practices.
  • Monitor resident wellness trends and utilization of services to identify emerging needs.
  • Collect and analyze assessment data, prepare annual reports, and recommend policies and initiatives that strengthen resident wellbeing and support organizational priorities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in higher education, residential life, counseling, student affairs, community wellness, or a related environment.
  • Experience providing supportive counseling, case management, or wellness coaching.
  • Experience responding to behavioral concerns, crisis situations, and emergency interventions.
  • Demonstrated success developing wellness education, prevention programming, or health promotion initiatives.
  • Experience supervising student leaders, peer educators, interns, graduate assistants, or professional staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and intercultural engagement.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound professional judgment, and work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to reside on-site and participate in an after-hours on-call rotation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clinical licensure or eligibility for licensure (LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, LPC, or equivalent).
  • Experience working with international students or globally diverse populations.
  • Experience in residential education, campus housing, or student affairs.
  • Training in trauma-informed care, restorative practices, suicide prevention, threat assessment, or crisis intervention.
  • Experience using assessment data to evaluate programs and inform strategic planning.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.

 

Salary Range

$70,000 – $75,000 commensurate with experience.
